Eating Clean, Trend or Lifestyle?

I bet you've recently heard the words eat clean at least a couple of times. But what do they really mean?

The idea behind eating clean is about creating mindfulness of the food’s pathway from its origin to your plate.

When people talk about clean eating, they are referring to pick healthy, whole, unprocessed foods. Nothing that comes in a can, box or that has more than 1 ingredient that you can’t pronounce.

Here is a quick guide to start eating clean:

1. Pick whole foods, this means to choose foods that are as close to their natural form as possible.

2. Eliminate highly processed foods.

3. Avoid refined carbs and eat more whole grains. Watch out for added sugars.

4. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables that are on season. Buy organic and preferably from your local farmers market.

5. Lower your salt intake. Try spices and herbs instead, to give flavor to your meals.

6. Drink at least 2 Liters of filtered water. Avoid pop and artificial juices.

7. Avoid/Reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake.

8. Get most of your protein from beans, legumes and nuts. When choosing meat and dairy, choose organic and grass-fed. Seafood is not considered organic so look for options low in mercury like: salmon, shrimp, tuna and cod.

9. Eat five to six small meals throughout the day. Include at least one carbohydrate, one protein and one fat in every meal.

10. Include moderate physical activity in your daily routine.

Eating clean is not a trend or a fad diet, it is a lifestyle that maximizes your energy and improves your health, while promoting the embracement of whole - organic foods and healthy fats and proteins.
